While many of us dream of stumbling upon a masterpiece like The Scream by Edvard Munch, the odds of such a discovery are almost nonexistent. Occasionally, our community turns up some amazing items.
Recently, a Tampa Bay woman approached us with an intriguing request—she wanted us to auction an original artwork by Munch. At first, we were skeptical, as authentic works by the legendary artist are rarely found outside major museums and collections.
What made this piece even more unique was its size. When we say “small,” we mean it literally—it was postcard-sized. In fact, it was an actual postcard, featuring a sketch by Munch himself. Despite its diminutive dimensions, the artwork carried undeniable historical and artistic significance. A known piece, it was listed in the official Norwegian database and is illustrated on the eMunch Edvard Munch Tekster Digitalt Arkiv as PN 1309.
Even A Postcard Sketch Can Sell High At Auction
Postcard sketches by celebrated artists are rare gems, often created as personal notes or spontaneous creative expressions. This piece offered a glimpse into Munch’s artistic process beyond his famous paintings.
Discoveries like these remind us why we love what we do. While finding a lost masterpiece may be a long shot, uncovering hidden treasures in our own backyard is always a thrill. We estimated it at $20,000 to $30,000 with a $15,000 reserve. Some experts had us rethinking this when they guessed it would only fetch well under $10,000, but the successful bidder paid $30,000 for it. Profits aside, we held a genuine Munch in our hands.
