Before we delve into the details of the auction, let’s explain some typical accepted auction terms. When a piece like this appears that was clearly done in the lifetime of the artist, the term “Circle of” is used… which refers to the close associates, students, or followers of a master artist. In this case, the circle of Simon de Chalons suggests that this artwork was created either by the artist or someone who was directly influenced by the style and techniques of Simon de Chalons, the famous French painter of the 16th century who was heavily influenced by Raphael’s work.
The consignor of this mesmerizing piece, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist, could easily be attributed to Simon de Chalons, whose well-known example of an almost identical piece
resides in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen in France titled La Sainte Famille. While it very well could be an original by Simon since the mannerism, the wood, the Pantone and the style are the same, most auction houses will err on
the side of caution, using “By,” “Circle of” or “After.”
Saint Elizabeth and Saint John The Baptist
The painting’s theme is popular among old masters representing religious themes, here the Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist. The attention to detail, the rich, vibrant colors, the use of light and shadow, and the lifelike expressions all point to the hand of a skilled artisan versed in artistic traditions of the time.
Simon De Chalons The Famous French Painter
While we’ve been lucky to have owned or offered for sale many old masters, we have never had one this large and this old. It measures over 4 feet by 5 feet, and it is not unusual for one of our 41 staff members to be caught just standing in front of it, almost hypnotized by its impact.
We have a modest auction estimate of $10,000 to $15,000, and of course, hope for it to bring much more.
