It is easy to boast (but still hard to believe) that our little Tampa Bay auction house has achieved worldwide status. Having sold almost $200 million of fine and decorative arts over the years, this past year was the most astonishing. An Andy Warhol print for $65,000, a Tiffany window for $165,000, an obscure oil on canvas for $33,000. A nice seascape was bought by a speculator from a local small auction house in Tampa Bay for $3,000.
The buyer simply drove it a few miles to us, and we sold it for $33,000. Plus a myriad of other “finds” including a John Singer Sargent, and a Childes Hassam that we sold for $42,000 – which was found sitting on the floor of an abandoned home. Plus a myriad of notable paintings over the years we have sold for $1,000 to $400,000. (The $400,000 painting was by an Asian artist; a local dealer found it in a storage unit.)
Lichtenstein Can Fetch Quite A Price
Yes, we’ve had the privilege of acquiring some iconic works of modern art, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Mapplethorpe. We’re passionate about these artists, particularly because of their close ties to our local community through their groundbreaking collaborations with USF Graphicstudio, a hub of innovation and experimentation in the art world. We believe that many of their prints and lithographs are
still circulating in our area, and we’re eager to buy them or have you consign them with us. We have a terrific following all over the world and enjoy an excellent reputation among the art community.
If you have a Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg or Robert Mapplethorpe print or lithograph, we’d love to talk to you. Whether you’re looking to sell for cash or are interested in learning more about the potential of our worldwide auctions, we’re here to help you navigate the art market. I have been buying art in Tampa Bay for over 30 years (and for 10 years before that in the Champaign/Urbana and Peoria, Illinois area).
