ST. Petersburg Through A Lens Of The Past

Sometimes “value” is not measured in dollars. We are buyers and sellers, yes – but we are also historians. We investigate everything that we buy – especially those things that are valuable historically as well as monetarily. A few years ago, we had an estate sale in St. Petersburg after two centenarian sisters — who had lived together their entire lives — passed away within a few months of each other.

A Simple Scrapbook Of Photos

The ladies had a camera and took pictures of everything. We sold a team photo of the 1923 Yankees for over $10,000. All told, we sold over $100,000 of art, memorabilia, coins and jewelry.

Among the things left over was a simple scrapbook of photos the sisters took in 1922-1923 — mostly houses in the Old Northeast neighborhood, properly identified with the addresses. We gifted them to the people who currently live in those dwellings to show them what their houses looked like almost 100 years ago. Imagine their surprise when we knocked on their door. It was such fun! The scrapbook also contained several photos of Williams Park during its heyday: cops writing tickets, horseshoes and chess matches, people dressed in their Sunday finest. While most have almost zero monetary worth, they are worth quite a lot, intellectually and historically.
