Carl Frey & Söhne was a Master Jeweler in Breslau, Germany. He made a myriad of items for royalty and other wealthy clients. We can’t trace the provenance, but this piece is one of the most spectacular we have seen. Even though it is part ivory, this foot-long letter opener is legal to own because it is just over 100 grams, and meets the de minimis law of being under 200 grams and a part of another structure.

German Gold At Its Best
It is 22K gold and depicts wild horses; it was likely made for a member of German royalty who had outside interest in the U.S. or Arabia. We paid $1,500 for it. Its value is yet to be determined, but we hope to achieve $2,500 or more. We will follow up on this masterpiece in a future article.
