The Ups And Downs Of Ancient To Modern Coins

Evaluation of gold coins can be a slippery slope, as indicated by a coin we sold last month for a customer, and a coin we recently took in for an upcoming sale.

In the case of the ancient Polish coin, looks can be deceiving. Our client had paltry offers from several dealers because it had been bent in two (as you can see by the crease in the picture). The Johann Casamir Polish gold ducat only weighs 3.4 grams and because of the damage they were offered gold value – approximately $300. Because of the rarity of the coin, we urged them to try the auction route.

The results were an astonishing $6,700. The buyer was a Polish coin collector. Yes, we are shipping it back to Poland, and the consignor was very happy. We had a similar conundrum on a rather rare $10 Indian coin consigned by a
Michigan retiree. He bought it for $8,000 as an investment 25 years ago. Only a handful of 1910 D, $10 Indian coins have an MS66 grade. This coin has tiny naturally occurring copper spots on the reverse, which slightly hurts the “curb appeal,” though the obverse has a very strong strike.

There is a Subjective Aspect To The Value Of Rare Coins

Only three coins have surfaced recently bringing between $10,000 to $38,000. Our auction estimate is $18,000 to $20,000 and we feel strongly we’ll achieve the $14,000 reserve the client wants.

Coin grading is not always black and white, as it is subjective; and collectors’ passions often increase the so-called “book value.” If you have rare gold coins for sale, please consider our auction route since it takes the guesswork out of valuation and is a transparent way to always know what your coins are worth.
